Custom Robo seamlessly blends deep action-RPG story elements with fast-paced, arena-based real-time robot battles. In the single-player campaign ("A New Journey"), players explore an overworld map, converse with characters, and participate in tournaments and bounty missions to earn new robo parts and advance the plot.
The heart of the game lies in its expansive customization system and intense 3D arena combat. Before every battle, players assemble their Robo from hundreds of interchangeable parts, including different Robo models (such as Shining Fighters or Aerial Beauties), hand guns, bomb launchers, pod dispensers, and legs. Combat takes place inside virtual holographic arenas ("Holodecks") featuring varied terrain, obstacles, and hazard zones. Players maneuver in full 3D, managing aerial dashes, energy gauges, and cover while blasting opponents to knock them down and drain their health to zero.
