The Urbz: Sims in the City transforms the classic Sims formula by replacing indirect cursor control with full, direct analog character movement tailored for console play. Set in a bustling, neon-lit metropolis, the story revolves around building your reputation to overthrow the villainous mogul Will B. Good, who is attempting to buy up and corporate-sanitize the city's unique cultural zones.
Instead of focusing purely on career ladders and mortgage payments, progression centers on unlocking access to the city’s exclusive districts, VIP lounges, and high-end fashion boutiques. Each of the nine city districts represents a distinct urban subculture—such as the hip-hop environment of Skyline Beach, the punk aesthetic of Kicktail Park, or the high-society vibe of Diamond Heights.
To earn Rep points and cash ("Simoleons"), players interact with local district leaders and perform real-time mini-games at street jobs, such as operating sushi bars, welding sculptures, or DJing at dance clubs. As your Rep grows, you unlock new social moves, exclusive clothing items, and apartment upgrades. With local 2-player split-screen support for cooperative living or competitive Rep battles, The Urbz stands out as one of the most unique simulation games on the GameCube.
