Pikmin blends real-time strategy and puzzle mechanics within a miniature, highly detailed natural world seen from a low-angle perspective. Players control Captain Olimar as he plucks, commands, and directs up to 100 Pikmin simultaneously. The gameplay revolves around careful time management across distinct, sprawling regions, where each day lasts roughly 13 minutes in real time.
The three types of Pikmin—Red, Yellow, and Blue—each possess specialized traits: Red Pikmin are fire-resistant and strong in combat, Yellow Pikmin can be thrown higher and handle bomb rocks, and Blue Pikmin are uniquely capable of surviving and navigating through water. Players must strategically allocate their squad to carry ship parts, defeat formidable predators, and clear obstacles before sunset forces Olimar to retreat to orbit to avoid nocturnal hazards.
