Sonic Adventure DX: Director's Cut begins when Dr. Eggman shatters the Master Emerald, releasing Chaos—a malevolent mutant entity that feeds on negative energy and grows stronger with every Emerald absorbed. To thwart Eggman's ambitions, six iconic heroes step forward: Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Big the Cat, and the robot E-102 Gamma. Each character features a radically distinct gameplay style: Sonic delivers high-speed platforming and Homing Attacks; Tails races Sonic or flies through aerial courses; Knuckles hunts for hidden Master Emerald shards; Amy navigates puzzle-filled stages while fleeing from a relentless robot hunter; Big the Cat relaxes to fish for his pet frog, Froggy; and E-102 Gamma engages in precision first-person shooter missions. The GameCube version introduces enhanced character models, updated textures, mission mode challenges, and full compatibility to collect and raise Chao pets using a Game Boy Advance via link cable.
