Sonic Mega Collection brings the golden age of 16-bit platforming directly to Nintendo hardware. The primary library includes the foundational genesis of the franchise: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Spinball, and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine. Notably, the collection features full lock-on technology emulation, allowing players to combine Sonic & Knuckles with Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 to play as Knuckles in earlier titles or experience the unified epic Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Outside of the main games, players can unlock extra Sega Genesis classics including Ristar, Flicki, The Ooze, and Comix Zone. Beyond the games, the compilation acts as a virtual museum, packed with hundreds of high-resolution digital scans of Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog comic book covers, original game manuals, development concept art, and high-quality video trailers.

Lock-on titles are unlocked automatically by playing the individual base games. For instance, playing Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles a certain number of times unlocks Sonic 3 & Knuckles in the main menu.
While the collection does not feature modern mid-game state saves, it allows you to save game progress using Memory Card save files for games that originally supported save battery features (such as Sonic 3).
Yes, multi-player functionality depends on the individual title selected. For example, Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 feature split-screen 2-player modes, while Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine offers 2-player competitive puzzle gameplay.
Sonic Mega Collection is the original Nintendo GameCube exclusive release. The later Plus version (released for PS2 and Xbox) added six Game Gear Sonic games, which were omitted from the GameCube version but later included in Sonic Gems Collection on GameCube.
